Cockroaches are not clean. They carry at least 6 highly pathogenic bacteria, also some nasty viruses, one of which is polio.
They often defecate on the food they feeding on.
You cannot be too clean. They can survive on all types of matter including soap. They can also exist without food for around 60 days.
Get an exterminator.
Having an infestation does not automatically mean that you keep a dirty house. They can come into the house on produce., as egg cases containing more than 40 eggs each. One female cockroach, in ideal conditions, is theoretically capable of generating a million offspring in one year.

I've learned from a fellow who was an insect expert that the cleanest insect known to man is the cockroach. Also, by the way, they're immune to radiation.

Contact the Cockrell Butterfly Exhibit at the Houston Museum of Science in Houston, Texas. I can't remember exactly what they said about roaches; but I think they said they're not as dirty as people commonly believe. (They have an insect-display that you go through in order to get to the butterfly-exhibit.)
