My advice is either wear your birthstone, but since it is such a special ring opal is a good choice as it is very rare. Also, saphire and rubies are also quite good, but if you want to go for a neutral ring (colour and texture, which is why most people go for diamonds, that and because they are expensive), Opal is a good choice as it is a creammy sort of glittery look to it, its quite mezmerizing. Alternatively, you dont even have to have a stone, you can have a gorgeous ring by just having the band with a beautiful design like vines intertwining or roses. But its always good to have something flashy so you can show it off... i mean whats an engagement without a little jealousy :) congratulations.

Are you afraid of 'blood diamonds' so you just don't wear diamonds at all; or do you not like how diamonds look? If its the former then cubic zirconia may be the way to go. But if you just don't like how they look I would say that whatever gems you think are beautiful would be the way to go. Opals are very pretty, real ones, not created. Created opals often look like clear rocks with confetti in them. An opal with stones matching the most prominant color of the opal would be very pretty.
But really, it should be whatever you think is very pretty. After all, its going on your hand.

I saw a BEAUTIFUL engagement ring that just had an emerald. It was simple and could go with everything (think about how green fillers match all colors of flowers!) But what it comes down to is your taste. Go to the jeweler's and look aroung, when you find the ring that that takes your breathe away, go for it! And, congratulations!

Try watching jtv.com . They cost less and give good value . Don't know reason not want diamond, but they will show lot's of alternatives. Beautiful ones at that. They also have web site where you can research stones (gems) ie:hardness /color value that kind of stuff . Happy life to you.

I think there's nothing any classier or more contemporary looking than just a perfectly plain wide band. A yellow-gold one (if you're into wearing yellow-gold jewelry) or a white-gold one (if, like me, you're into wearing white-gold and/or silver jewelry). A plain wide band is my personal preference -- and I have started noticing that more-and-more gals are wearing them. (Of course, I'm older ... I think that, when you get married for the 1st time and you're in your early 20's, for example, gals feel like they have to have a diamond or some other big stone ... but, when you're older and you've "been-there-done-that", you get to where you already have a drawer full of stones that you never wear and you like just the plain metal. I may be the only one who feels this way, however ...)

A lot of women prefer stones other than diamonds. You can always have ruby's or pretty much any precious stone you want...it doesnt have to be a diamond. Just choose whatever you prefer.

what is your favorite gem??
I don't really care for diamonds either. Really wish we had done it up with amethyst, which is my fave. Never wear the diamond one anyway.
Go with what you like. That is always best.
