Yes. Back in the mid 1970s we lived in Charleston. I was still in college at the time when I got married and my husband accepted a job there. I decided to go to a school just outside Chas. (on the way to Huntington, can't remember the name of the area, seems like it started with an "I". At night you could see the flames from the chemical plant shooting into the air). Most dismal place I'd ever seen. I had wrongly assumed WV's state schools were as good as the state I can from. Lasted one semester and then transferred to a school in Chas.

Spent time visiting Huntington & Parkersburg--liked it very much. Actually the 4-5 years we lived there we saw most of the state. It has some very beautiful spots. Even southern WV where the coal mines are can be beautiful in the spring when the redbuds, dogwood trees, etc. are in full bloom. Once you got into the hollows ("hollers" as people pronounced them) and places like Beckley, Madison, Whitesville, Cabin Creek, etc. if you weren't a native, you'd find yourself not waiting to get out. People weren't tolerant of strangers--especially "Yankees" or those not of their religious or racial persuasion.

I drove through WV several years ago on a road trip back to where I'm now living and stayed for a while in Chas. Nothing much seems have to changed as far as attitude, although the town looks so much more different. I don't think I'd want to go back again unless it was to show grandchildren where we lived.

Will admit there are some fantastic artisans in the state--the quilters in Cabin Creek (Sen. John Rockefeller's--the governor at that time--wife, if I remember correctly, was a patron and tried to help promote the cottage industry), and of course the small glass companies--Blenko, Fenton and one that made gorgeous cranberry glass. I understand some if not all are out of business.

WV is nice to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. At all. Ever. I went there with my boyfriend and went to see some of his family. On the way we drove past Senica Rocks. It is a beautiful place. Great for the out door person who likes to rock climb and hike and such. But you wouldn't want to live there. Ever. No seriously. Ever.
