Places like Claires, and Piercing Pagoda are generally good, but they can really vary from place to place. I have had my ears pierced several times, as has my mom, and I can tell you some things to look for.

First, try to get good studs. You are much less likely to get an infection, or have a reaction to the earings if you us 14k gold. surgical stainless steal is ok, but you are still more likely to have a reaction to that then pure gold. Basically, splurge and buy the best studs that you can.

secondly, make sure the place looks clean. The gun should be washed after EVERY use, and the person doing the piercing should wash there hands. Also if they wear gloves, you will lower your risk of infection even more. If the piercing area seems at all dirty, or cluttered, especially with un sanitary things such as used gloves, walk away.

I think my third and final piece of advice would be to talk to the piercer before you start. If they get pushy, and try to hurry you along, walk away. Also if you can, hang out for a bit and see if you can catch the person piercing somebody else. If they seem at all in experienced, or nervous, they probably don't know what there doing. Believe it or not, there is no lisence required to pierce ears. Different stores have there own policies on how they train there employees, but in general I don't know of any states that require any formal training or lisencing to become a piercer. If possible talk to any friends that have had there ears pierced and find out where they went. Chances are if many of your friends have had good luck, you will too.

Claire's is fine because they pierce you directly with the earing and they throw away the gun. It all depends on how well you take care of your ears if they get infected or not. I recommend cleaning them with a special solution for newly pierced ears at least twice a day and after each time you turn them (which you are supposed to do to keep them loose).

A piercing gun, traditionally used by mall stores for piercing ears, is typically inappropriate for piercing of any kind. Almost all medical professionals agree that piercing guns cannot be adequately sterilized (an alcohol wipe is NOT sterilization); this means that they are capable of passing hepatitis and other diseases.

In addition, experience has taught the industry that:

* Ear piercing studs are dull and tear through the body, causing unnecessary pain, healing duration, and other possible complications.
* Ear piercing guns are inaccurate and not designed for piercing most body parts, resulting in improper piercing placement.
* Ear piercing studs are the wrong size and too short for most piercings, their diameter is commonly 16ga or 18ga : that's too small for any piercings, and might cause migration.

Any "piercer" using a piercing gun should be avoided.

At a professional piercing shop. There have been studies done now, showing just how much bacteria can be found on one of those piercing guns! It doesn't matter how much they are cleaned, there are still little crevices that bits of flesh and blood can hide. GROSS!!! At least at a piercing shop, they use a brand new sterile needle, and it gets thrown away once your piercing is done.
