I found first one inside my home, also second one. Third I saw outside in my back yard. Several days between each one seen. It really looks like the red head of an ant. Total body size about half inch. body has the markings of a bee with yellow and black stripes. Yet differs from the shape of a bee. I've lived in this house 17 years and NEVER have seen anything like this. I've researched types of ants, bees, earwigs and others. I cannot figure this out. If anyone else has any ideas let me know. Or if you know what it is, please send me an email. thanks!

Gene Kritsky is the Editor in chief of "The American Entomologist" publication, and he can be e-mailed at cdarwin@aol.com. Take a picture, and send it to him in an e-mail with the same question.

What country/part of the country do you live? Without seeing a picture of it, it sounds like a type of beetle. Here in Ohio, US there's some similar to what you described. A guess would be a type of wood beetle?... possibly new to your area because of migration? In the western US where I used to live, similar insects where there but not the same colors as you described. Those were tan/beige color.... we always called them "Potato Bugs", harmless but look pretty mean!

If you're able to get a pictures of one, there's numerous places where you can send it to get info on them, many Universities have entomology labs... or probably most pest control places would be able to at least identify it for you..... If you find that they're not a harmful type of pest, just let them be!

Let me know if this looks like it,,,,,,it could be a jerusalem cricket....if not, let me know and I will figure it out because I love bugs! Also, these are harmless if it is a jerusalem cricket. Also these guys eat organic matter and prefer moist enviroments and cannot live in the dry heat (though you may not care to know all that) LOL.

I think Turtlegirl nailed it.

I thought I knew all about insects but I would have taken forever to guess the Jerusalem cricket.

Get the Orkin man! Seriously though, get one of those pest control companies. They would be the first to know.

Sounds like the Piltdown bug to me! Or, possibly, the Cardiff critter!
