A simple phrase that distinguishes between scientific method and revelation.
For example, I believe in the Christian bible as God's words spoken by the prophets. This is no proof even for the existence of God. But there are many examples of belief: Jesus believed that God would raised him from the grave. Even on the cross, Jesus' believed that God would raised him when he prayed Psalms 22 when he was dying.
May I humbly suggest you do a word study in the Gospel of John for believe/believer/belief as well as nonbeliever. If one of the witness can't help you, who can?
To your second question, try 1 Cor 10:23-24 with emphasis on verse 24. It is the starting place.

Have faith in yourself and have faith in Jesus. When he sees you have that faith, especially the faith in Jesus, your boyfriend will see faith in action, the reality of faith. It's not that your boyfriend doesn't have faith in himself as much as it is that your boyfriend doesn't know how to believe, how to be faithful. Be faithful yourself, and then he has a greater capability of having faith in himself. He has to see your faith in God and in yourself in action. Otherwise, you're just talking about ideals he can't see, and he's still where "seeing is believing". When you are faithful, you come to "believing is seeing". God Bless you.
