First of all, and I freely admit that this is my own bias, if you watch "American Idol" - stop! (at least, stop listening to what Simon has to say, even if he is occasionally right.) There are some very talented people on that show, but the format is highly critical and reenforces that attitude that if your voice is not what is "in" right now, you shouldn't sing at all.

Having said that, find an outlet where you are comfortable. Some people thrive on karaoke (where, let's face it, alcohol dulls criticism). Others find groups like choirs or being in musical productions help boost their self-esteem and give them the chance to improve their skills.

I have a friend who is/was in your shoes who joined her church choir where she could sing and be supported but not be singled out if she didn't want it. And yes, eventually she got up the confidence to sing a solo bit for the Christmas service.

If you have the resources and really want to learn to sing, take lessons. And if possible, take lessons from someone who is classically trained and teaches that style. Even if you never sing a note of Mozart in your life, it is the best training for the voice and the principles can be used in any style. Plus you get the bonus of learning how to NOT oversing and damage your vocal cords.

Whatever you choose, keep singing!!

Head to a karaoke bar w/ some friends, have a few drinks, then take the mic. Choose an easy song, a song everyone knows. This way, others will want to sing along with you...so you won't feel so uncomfortable and insecure on stage.

Who cares what people think about you. I can't sing a bit but it doesn't stop me from singing to the top of my lungs whenever a song comes on that I like. My poor husband and children just turn the radio up and hope that it's a short song...lol.

Go to a local "Open Mic". If you play an instrument bring it and sing and play. No one cares what you sound like. They are VERY supportive there. If you don't play an instrument print out the lyrics and chords to the songs you want to sing and give them to someone that plays an instrument and they will most likely play it for you. Hope this helps!

I don't understand how you can love to sing, but don't think your good. I think you just want attention and your not gonna get that by saying "Oh I suck I don't sound good." Just sing and take people's compliments and thank them. That's the scary part.

Take some singing lessons. The intructors will tell you if you are good or not, and if you are they'll help you improve your talent. Hopefully it will also help you with your confidence becuase you will meet some critics and you've got to be able to take it.

don't ever stop doin what you love just because somebody told you it doesn't sound good

Imagine you are just talking in a melodic rhythmical way. Singing is talking on a different level. Don't be shy, express yurself!
