17 is YOUNG!!!!!!!!Find YOUR instrument and then find a teacher that inspires you to PRACTICE. Kill your TV, un-plug the computer and practice hours and hours. Good bassists and keyboardists are hard to find and you'll find more gigs on these instruments. Practice SINGING too cuz a singer/instrumentalist is more in demand that someone who DOESn'T sing at least harmony parts. The trick is to look around and find a teacher who inspires you to practicepracticepractice. ALSO< listen to music with headphones(Not to loud)and pick out what the different instruments are doing in each song. This will help you hear "the big picture" of the song. GOOD LUCK> YOU can DO IT if you eliminate your TV and mindless computer time. It's up to YOU to WORK AT IT AND EXCEL! You only need to get good at ONE instrument to get a gig

As long as you can focus on it and not just suddenly drop it because it's hard, there's no reason you couldn't. Don't expect to be good after playing for five minutes. And the Mars Volta are great, and after some time of practicing, there's no reason you can't be as good.

I picked up the piano my senior year and I was playing some pretty tough Ben Folds songs after only about a year and half. It's possible, but don't underestimate how much practice it's going to take. Good luck.

nope.

im 11 but i know that if you set your mind to it-at any age- you can play an instrument.

plus, some people are musically challenged and others have a musical hearing, and to find out if you're good, you need to TRY!!!!!!!!!

~*~if u dont want to buy the instrument then rent it, like i did first the first 3 or 6 months.~*~

At 17? Not too late. At 97? Not too late. If you want to do it, go for it!

It wouldn't necessarily take you longer, though you definitely would have to practice a lot more.

It's not about how LONG you've been playing the instrument... It's about how much PRACTICE you've gotten in.
