http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/moviemom/ is a decent place if you are trying to edit for children, but if you just want general "why"'s, check out http://www.filmratings.com/

The MPAA does not have a certain set of regulations for rating movies. They basically watch the movie and then vote on which rating to give it. The most detailed information you can get is that it is rated PG 13 for sexual content, drug and alcohol use and language. There is no way to get more information than that.

if your looking at a "movie mainpage" it should tell you what the rating is. (like: rated pg13 for sex, nudity, and violence.) here's an example http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1807839024 ... look under "MPAA rating" and this will give you the rating for Superman Returns. that was just an example though.

Go to yahoo movies (http://movies.yahoo.com/), search for a movie, click on it, scroll down to MPAA rating. Also, sometimes movies are rated by Movie Mom on yahoo and she is very good at explaining if movies are suitable for children and stuff.

screenit.com is the best for very (sometimes too) detailed reasons why a film got its rating.

As a result there are spoilers galore, so be warned.
