At four weeks old and growing, a lot is happening to its 5 senses. So much that you in your entire lifetime, will never be able to accomplish.

Its sense of sight and hearing being at its peak. The child is innocent at this point to anything it sees or ears. It does not judge what it perceives. It only absorbs the information it see or ears, and its mind will store it and at the same time it will try and associate and find meaning to anything it perceives.

A mothers voice and heartbeat, is all it knows at this point because that is all it ever knew in the womb.

I doubt anyone can give you a measurement of a child's perception at any given time line of its growth.

Babies are born with what they estimate to be 20/200 vision. 20/20 is considered to be perfect vision.
Their sharpest vision is about 12-14 inches from their face. Very nicely the distance from the crook of your arm to your face. Convenient for looking at your face when being cuddled in your arms. Also, perfect distance from moms' breast to her face.
It's felt that they can actually see all colors, but are more attracted to the contrast of light and dark. Especially at a distance, colors are muted because their focus isn't sharp. Light and dark - hair surrounding face, dark eyes, dark hole (also known as a mouth - when you're a baby, peopleare always cooing and talking to you, so that makes for a dark hole on the face), all make faces fascinating.

Sweety they can only see as far as the crook of your elbow to your eyes if they are at the brest.... mother nature has made this so. The perfect distance for talking to them is that distance. They also only see in black and white at this time, so they really appreciate eyeliner and lipstick for this makes those features (the ones they should pay attention to anyway) more clear to them. Best wishes

Not more than a couple feet away from their face.Newborns see Black and White best and stripes.Thats why there are a lot of developmental toys with stripes in black and white on them, things they are focusing on is stimulating their brain to think, and thats a good thing for their development.

newborns see balck and white because their eyes aren't well adjusted yet, and i am not mistaken they can't see that far, like 50 ft across the room.
