My favorite thing to do is to read. I joined www.bookcrossing.com many years ago so that I could share my books and also, get new ones that I haven't read yet. It is a wonderful site. You can look up books and see if someone has the book you are interested in and they will share them with you. You can also go to library sales. When you buy books from them you are helping the library and helping yourself. You can go to yard sales and garage sales or moving sales. People are trying to get rid of stuff so they can have more room. Books are often the last thing to be picked up and bought by people.

There are two ways to get your hands on old books for cheap or free, depending on what you mean by 'old'. If you are looking for classics, or outdated books, then yard sales are a dream come true. You can often talk the owner down to pennies for used books they don't want anymore - try grabbing a bunch of them, offering $1 to 'take them off their hands', then ditch the ones you don't want.

If you're looking for something a bit more specific, I recommend http://www.bookcrossing.com - in every area of the US & world, members leave new and old books in locations no one else knows about but people who visit the site. When you find a book in your area, it's customary to leave another one (either in the same place, or somewhere nearby, or at the very least within a few days) behind. This is a great way to find interesting books!

I bet your local library has a booksale where you can get books really cheap . . . if that doesn't work, try www.freecycle.com to find a Freecycle chapter near you. People give away free stuff all the time, and it's a great way to get not-really-junk out of your house!

If you're looking for books to read, go to http://www.paperbackswap.com. It's an online book exchange.

Totally wonderful site.
