You need a T-Mobile account. Can pay either daily or monthly. Don't need to buy anything if you have a wi-fi card in your computer/pda/whatever.

Some places are free, some charge. If you have a laptop with a wireless card, you can click on the wireless icon and tell it to show you the available wireless connections.
The free ones are unlikely to be encrypted. If you see a strong unencrypted signal, try connecting, You will find out soon enough if it asks you for a credit card.
Do not be suprised if they want you to buy something. Businesses exist to make money, not to give away internet service.
I have set up Tech Support corners in more that 1 starbucks., it cost me a couple of cups of coffee, and I picked up long term customers.

you need a wireless connection on your laptop or PDA. It needs to be enabled, and I think the service is free, as long as wireless connectivity is enabled on your device.
