maybe meniscus tear. After two weeks of physical therapy, knee still hurts, feel like some lead weight inside there. Originally unstable when hurt two weeksa ago. Feels sore when walking. Is orthroscopic surgery the only way to fix this? I'm doing exercises to strengthen the area about the knees. Some arthritis on x-ray, no MRI yet.

It depends on what you mean by "went out." If your knee actually gave way, causing you to fall or something along those lines, then you might have a torn ligament. It could also be a meniscal tear catching in the joint. However, a knee, or any joint for that matter, wouldn't fail due to tendonitis alone. The feeling of lead weight inside is most likely from adema inside the joint, along with scar tissue. The soreness could from a tear, the swelling, or the arthritis. Nothing can be diagnosed conclusively without an MRI. Go see an orthopaedic surgeon and have it looked at.

tendonitis is defined as inflammation of the tendon. If that is indeed what you have physical therapy and ice packs should help the tendon relax and go back into it's natural state. If you have a tear in your meniscus more than likely you will need suregery. Your doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to try and control the swelling in the joints, but 9 times out of 10 a tear to the meniscus always results in surgery.

My roommate had surgery to repair the meniscus that had flipped upside down in his knee. He tried PT first, but with similar results. A few weeks wrapped up and light duty, he's just fine. The PT beforehand seemed to help in recovery after surgery.

If it's still bothering you after two weeks, it would be best to have an MRI done on it, and the results should tell you whether or not an orthoscopic surgery maybe required.

Could be that, I would think that if it is still sore after that many weeks that you should get a MRI. If you don't feel comfortable with what your doctor is telling you then go and get a second opinion.

You should consider an MRI to see if there is a tear. Also, cortisone injections sometimes help. Try rest and ice also.
