I am looking for a notebook that is lightweight, has high speed, great storage and won't die on me within 5 years. I am going into Real Estate and I want a notebook. I am thinking about buying a Dell PC. I also want the notebook capable of doing multiple tasks, such as word processing, wireless internet access and presentations. I don't want to spend a lot of money. My budget is $2,000.

Can anyone suggest what to look for and what is the importance of a hardrive, software, GM and other things like that. I don't understand..

Best regards,
Lana.

Lana,
Go with your instincts and get the Dell notebook. They have a great selection with different features and software programs to suit your needs and well under your $2000 budget.
Great warranty and support as well. They'll definitely be around for a long time.
Typical builds nowadays have plenty of hard drive and memory for 90% of the user population... you should be fine with those amounts for realty work.
Only thing extra I would recommend is an external hard drive to allow you to back-up your most important data files. A tech or salesperson will be able to get you lined-up with that as well.

All new laptops will have what you are looking for if you go $1500+

Dell is good. We got one ourselves, plus it is fairly easy to build your own. You want as much memory as possible. 256K is minimum, but should be at least 512K.

The wireless modem will come with it. The one thing you want to consider is the size. Small, lightweight. That is what we got, but I let my wife use it because I can't type on the keyboard. I need a full sized keyboard, so make sure you check that out...whichever is preferable for you!

Lana:
since you seem to know so little about computers, you should start off with a low level computer that does what you need to do now. You can get a nice Dell notebook for less than $700.00 that will do everything you mentioned. Save the $1,400.00 for when you know a little better what to do with it.
Cheers,
Jay

I love this laptop (I bought it), it should have just about everything you need, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115246 though whether or not it will last you five years is another story (not breaking down) but hardware spec wise. I replace computers about every three years but that's your call.

I'll leave it to someone else for the explanations, I don't have the time right now.

You can find laptops that don't die in five years easily enough, but can you find one that won't be obsolete in five years? You'd also want about 1000x more memory than John is telling you. Try MBs! In fact, its easy to find computers with 1GB or more! Heck, my digital camera has 1GB!
