Carpeting stairs is not like carpeting a floor. I have a couple buddies that are in the flooring installation business and I can tell you from watching them that the stairs are best left to the professionals.

From what I saw on This Old House and DIY to the Rescue on television, I strongly recommend hiring this job out to the pros especially if there are bends in the stairway. There are far too many corners and edges to get done quickly and making it look presentable.
But you can cutdown on labor costs by tearing up the old carpet and vacuuming up the debris and discarding.

basicly its upholstering on wrapparounds
regular boxed in stairs (Wall on both sides)cut carpet width of stairs, stairs should have tack strip on sides top and bottom,
lay out rug up the stairs, start at bottom set and tuck the use kicker to stretch up over riser, use stair tool to tuck behind strip then stretch to strip on sides dont cut length just keep going slow tedious process ,
pro will do better job worth spending money for labour
