My husband cut his forearm at work and had to have six stitches. The doctor that saw him didn't give him any aftercare. In fact, all he did before hand was wipe the wound off with some alcohol pads. What should he be cleaning it with? Should he keep it covered with a bandage all the time? Is there anything else that he should be doing?

Keep the wound clean and let it air out at a time when it won't get debris in it. Depending upon the type of stiches they are, dissovable, silk, etc. You can try looking up care for them online at webmd.com. I use that site all the time. You definitely want to keep the stitches dry so that the wound can air out and heal. Keepng the stitches wet will only encourage bacteria growth.

Any antibacterial soap without heavy perfume or dye once a day. IHe could put a little antibiotic ointment (neosporin) on,but it's not mandatory. A bandage isn't necessary unless he does something the wound might get dirty. Any redness, swelling, heat or discharge should be evaluated by a physician.

As long as it is clean and the edges aren't super red or puss isn't coming out then he'll be fine.
