The Fair Credit Reporting Act allows employers to look at credit reports, but they must notify you in advance that they will be looking at it, and then they must notify you if they plan to use it to make an 'adverse" decision about your application, allowing you an opportunity to reply.
As to whether bad credit will mean you can't get a job, that isn't necessarily so. If it's the only information they have about you though, bad credit could mean you'd be lazy at work, or not dependable. However, if your criminal record is spotless and your references are great but your credit is lousy, they probably won't care about the credit report.

You can have bad credit and a well paying job.
Only certain jobs where you'll handle lots of money or around valuable items, will check your credit report. However, they have to have you authorize the credit check first, by signing a piece of paper when filling out your application. Some companies, before they give a raise/promotion to an employee, might also check their credit.
Your credit won't show on criminal background check. And the employer doesn't usually discuss credit issues with the potential employee.
I don't believe bad credit necessarily makes you a bad employee. I don't have great credit but I work my butt off at the office! It's just that companies have to watch their back. If you have little self-control, in debt and in a position of handling money, you're more likely to steal.

Hate to answer a question with a question, but at any job interviews you have had have they asked you about your credit?
I personally have never had a job interviewer ask me about my credit history, and to be honest if they did I would not release it to them. That to me sounds like bad business, just a way for a company to have an excuse to either deny you a job or hire you at a lower wage and is an invasion of privacy. On the other hand, if you have a criminal record of credit fraud and are trying to get a job that requires you to have access to credit card information of customers that is something the company can very well discriminate against.
I have never heard of a credit score being listed on a criminal background check.
And the key to overall better pay is better education, job skill training ect. Having something on a piece of paper that just says you can do this makes all the difference in the world.

Take care of your old debts. I have a bad credit history from my past. I hope I keep my current job for a while cuz that'd be no fun. When filling out applications they should inform you if they do background & credit checks. You should be informed of this and have to sign a document giving the inquiring employer your approval to do so. Good Luck!

Even if you have a degree you may not be able to get a good job until your credit is corrected. We are trying to hire a new person now but so far all of them have bad credit.

they dont check your credit when you are applying for a job- they check your resume- your former jobs and performance and your level of education and relative expereinced towards that job. Plus the motivation and feel out your personality and see if your a good fit for their company. They do check for criminal records and drug tests though.
