My boyfriend just got an opportunity to design a movie poster for a high-end company. Before he walks in we were wondering what the average person should be paid for this sort of job. I know there are variables involved, but it would probably be for a world released poster and we would love some ballpark ideas. Thanks!

He needs to do a breakdown of cost of what it will take to produce the prototype. He needs to think of things like this. 1. Cost of Photo Shoot - will he be doing this or will he have to hire someone to do this. Cost per hour for a photographer. Is the cover the main characters in the movie or a drawn likeness, if it's a drawn likeness or scene you must draw then will he draw this or will he be hiring someone. 2. Graphics - Is he a graphic designer or will he have to hire one and the cost per hour or project for a Graphic Designer. 3. Cost of lay out 4. Cost of supplies 5. Then the cost of the actual concept or design of the completed piece. It's not it being a world release it's about the art and the talent needed to produce this prototype. Does he need to bring in more than one example for them to choose from? If so double or triple the cost of all the above. Is this his first time in doing such a thing and if he an illustrator? They have budgeted already for such a task when they finance the making of a movie. The movie poster is what attracks people to see the movie along with the stars, so it is considered a important part in marketing the movie. There actually exists Guild Books for pricing of such things. I know that the Graphics Guild says that it's somewhere around $55 and hour for a Art Director. He should figure out if this is what they are hiring him as, and then what the budget is for the poster. If he comes in with a buget a costs breakdown it might be a good thing on showing how he came to the final price if they want the cost to produce a final product. If he is just being hired as a Art Director he should call the Guild and ask their advice they are always willing to give answers to such questions or if he is planning on doing this more, he might want to purchase the Guild book which breaks down each job and what is expected of each person and what is considered when changes need to be made etc. A good investment and it's what producers use when Budgeting a Movie, or a prebudget when financing such undertakings. I hope this helps in some way, if I can be of any further help please ask.
