Solve 2x + 3 = 9

Substract both sides by 3,

2x + 3 - 3 = 9 - 3

2x + 0 = 6

2x = 6

Divide both sides by 2,

2x/2 = 6/2

x = 3 (answer)

this is hard to describe because this is the very simplest of algebra

it is very important to understand how this works because all the rest of math relies on it

you can start by just looking at it and realizing that something is added to 3 to get 9. that something has to be 6, right?

then you see that something is multiplied by 2 to get the 6, that something, x, has to be 3

okay, in algebra, we have a systematic way of getting the answer that still works when they get too hard to just look at and figure out

2x + 3 = 9 that means that the 2x + 3 equals, or is the same as 9

if you do anything to the 2x + 3, and do the same thing to the 9, they should still be equal

with that in mind we will manipulate the equation until x is by itself and equalling something. this is called solving for x

2x + 3 =9 we will subtract 3 from each side of the equation
2x + 3 -3 = 9 - 3
2x = 6 now we will divide both sides by 2
2x/2 = 6/2

2/2=1 so we get 1x or a single x or x=6/2=3
x=3, same as we got before

now check it, put the 3 back in for x and see if you got a solution that works
2*(3)+3=9
6+3=9
9=9

hooray
keep at it

2(x)+3=9. x=3

The expression is algebraic the idea is to get "x" by itself. dividing both sides by 2 won't work as 2 will not divied evenly into 9, so subrtact the 3 from both sides that leaves 2x=6 now divided both sides by 2 2x+3=9
2x +3 -3 =9-3
___________
2x=6
2x/2 =6/2
x = 3 so 2(3)+3=9

You subtract three from both sides. Then 2x=6. Then you divide both sides by two. Then x=3. so it is 2(3)+3=9; 6+3=9; 9=9

subtrract 3 from both sides (2x+3)-3=9-3
divide both sides by two 2x/2=6/2
simplify x=3
