yes, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Nelson Rockefeller were liberal Republicans. Many Democratic governors and Senators from the South and Midwest from the Civil War up until the 1990s were conservative, notably George Wallace, Zell Miller, Richard Russell. There are... If I remember correctly, the term Dixicrat refered to Southern Conservative Democrats.

But, I would say that either of those labels wouldn't necessarily be somebody on the extremem either way. In other words, they'd be just left of center or just right of center.

That said, it would also depend on who you asked about a given person. I've heard somebody say that Clinton was a conservative. Huh?? I'm a Dem and wouldn't consider Wllie a Con. Left of center is probably closer to the truth.

Your liberal republican would be Arlen Specter. There is one Senator who could be considered a conservative Democrat, but his name slips my mind right now.

Specter is a big disappointment and one of the reasons I changed to a registered Independent. I'm tired of the lies and BS from BOTH parties.
