Males normally have longer fins. Females genrally have shorter fins. There are short finned males though- be careful when buying females! If one of your "girls" starts wrapping the other females then you probably have a little boy on your hands.

females tend to have stripes on their bodies not all though.Heres a bunch of girls

Last but not least- Short finned male

As you can see by the photos the "males are colorful- females are dull" is inaccurate. I have three beautiful females- including a striking cambodian. They are a heck of a lot prettier then the males that my friends buy at walmart.

Lynn's on the right track with her pictures. Males are larger and have long flowing fins. Unless you have a Plakat which are still bred for fighting rather than looks. (They are rare in the US, and not generally sold in pet stores.) Also males will generally flare their face in response to a mirror. (Females can flare, but it's much smaller.)

Note that all betta females, and are aggressive to other bettas. If you stick 2 females in a 3 gallon with no hiding places they will try to kill each other 9 times out of 10. (Unless they were raised from birth together. Males are far more aggressive than females will often kill a female after mating. (Of course sometimes the female or male will the other before mating.) That said bettas often get along fine with fish that don't resemble bettas.

I have a 30 gallon tank with 3 female bettas along with my mollies, and other random fish. The females generally limit themselves to a little smack talk, and posturing every so often. (They puff up and display their fins.) It did take a week to work out pecking when I 1st got them. The important thing is the less dominate fish can run and get out of sight. Which is important as betta aggression is all sight based. Otherwise the dominant fish will constantly abuse the other.

It is quite easy. Like in birds, the male is more attractive then the female. It is usually red or blue but sometimes you will see a white one. Once I saw a pink one! Females are a little smaller and have smaller fins. They are usually brown, but turn red or blue eventully.

Fun fact: The stomach of a beta is the size of its eye-so don't feed it to much.

i actually kept 2 women with a male betta for about per week. each and every thing become nice. both women were crowntails. And the male turned right into a Plakat. about per week later, between the girls tail fin become in simple terms about thoroughly lacking. So I in simple terms went ahead and placed those 2 women in with something else of them (in a 29 gallon). maximum male bettas that puppy shops carry are already fantastically old. till you already know what a snug one sounds like, you've were given a male that doesnt care or is so old it cant do something. back although, you're coping with betta splendens, accurate? they're the most complication-free betta species interior the commerce. commonly, male/female mixtures can't be finished in small tanks. maximum wild kinds like, betta patoti, betta imbellis, betta macrostoma etc are many times offered by using the pair. maximum of them would nicely be kept in a 10 or 20 gallon without issues in any way.

Females are more gentle. Males like fighting. If U place 2 males in a small tank, they fight each other. & males like chasing females. So U know the one being chased is a f. & the one who's chasing is M.
