There is a difference. Bass amps are usually about the same price or even cheaper so don't worry about the price difference.

You can play a bass through a guitar amp....just not as loud and "thumping"........the transformers and capacitors are a little different. You can play guitar through a bass amp, too.

If you want a really CLASSIC bass AND guitar amp all-in-one try this one:

Just be sure that Fender still makes this amp heavy-duty enough to handle bass through the speakers.....VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION !!!!

It's not the loudest bass amp now but a good guitar amp that will handle bass. Not cheap but a good investment, maybe.......look for a good used one.

A good small Ampeg amp or a Gallien-Krueger would be nice and easier to carry around.

Go to the locally owned music shop in town and ask them what they think.

Have some fun !!!!!

Here are a few good amps at moderate prices. Smaller practice amps by these companies should be good to start with.....if you don't need them to be too loud.

Go to any music store that sells instruments or go online and plug in "bass amp" in the search box, and you will find just the right bass amp for you.

Bass amps are different from guitar amps in that there is a huge frequency difference between the two instruments. A bass is much lower in frequency/pitch than a guitar, hence the need for an amp and speaker that can accommodate the lower notes.

Also note (no pun intended) that your speaker needs to be able to accommodate the lower notes as well so what you are really looking at here is the purchase of a bass amp and speaker.

You do need a bass amp! A guitar amps speakers would be ruined because of the low frequency range. You got good advice.
You can however play a guitar through a guitar or bass amp though.

I don't play guitar or bass myself (I play keyboard) but I'd guess that the reason that there are different amps for basses and guitars is that the bass is so much lower than the guitar that the speakers would have to handle completely different frequencies.

Yeah, you need to buy bass amp. I have a Kustom 100. Works perfectly fine. Fender also makes great amps.
