I have heard of a company trying to manufacture college laptops for $100 dollars each. They are doing market research and feasibility study. These laptops will have the minmum configuration needed for college students and it will sell like an ipod. The company plans to make a great furtune out of this business. The main idea is cost reduction by volume manufacturing.. If the company didn't go bankrupt you might be able to get these in near future...
I personally like IBM laptops. the cheapest ones are from ibm web site, which are remade but comes to some warranty.

I consider myself a computer geek. I started on microprocessors in 1974, and in retirement, my main hobby is computers, especially Linux. I buy the cheapest computer I can find, because modern computers will almost all do everything you might need to do.
I remember when my son got married a couple years ago in Fort Lauderdale, my daughter had a college homework project due while away from home. she had planned to use her brother's expensive laptop, but it got a virus, hee, hee.
So, she turned it in, in Word format, with my cheapie, using OpenOffice.org which will produce .doc files.
Anyway, instead of spending $2,000 for a laptop when a $750 Dell will do all you need to do, get the cheap Dell, and one of those palm thingies, and leave the rest of the money in the bank so when you goof up and your machines are stolen, you can buy more just like them.
