Lets say that you want to know how fast somebody is running in an instant of time. For this, you would need to use "limits" or "derivitives". Anyway, in order to solve for the limit, you would have to factor for "h", and there are cases that are completely unfactorable. This is the time that you would need quadratic formula to solve this problem...
Lets say another situation where you want to solve for the speed of a storm, and you are given certain variable, one to the second power. Now you want to know how soon it will reach NY for example, but u dont know the speed... U might need to use the quadratic formula to solve for the speed, or X, or whatever you want to call it.
Basicaly to say, in normal life, there is no significant need to use it, but there is always the chance that you will stumble upon a problem in some corse of your life where it can come in very usefull.

Well, in the realy world, if you ever wanted to get a job as an engineer or any type of scientist, then I'd advise memoriving that. Chemists also use the quadratic formula when dealing with reversible reactions and whenever you deal with a squaring function (quite common) you may need it.
Jobs that do not require use of the quadratic formula:
Hobo
Psychiatrist
Food service manager.

I have used the quadratic formula several times to solve equations that describe systems at our plastics manufacturing plant.
I get payed twice what most of the people at the plant make because I can do math. As an engineer, I don't do math every day but when a little algebra, trigonometry or calculus pops up, I can handle it. Its one of the reasons they pay me well.

If you haven't gone to college or did go and got an art or history degree or something like that. Then the answer to your question is so that little kids can't make fun of you for not knowing it. You'll (probably) never need to use it again.
However, if you are going into any form of science related field, then that is one of the most important formulas to know because it pops up very frequently when trying to solve certain problems / model certain things.

I think it depends where and what you want to do after you leave school, some people enjoy math while others don't...some of this genetic but most of it is the way people want others to behave. While working in industry, I noted that many times people who have an education and know how to solve and do problems such as this use it as a power grab (sadly so)... Others will use their knowledge in more productive means and give back to those who they remembered in their youth as not liking certain parts of school.
Any way you look at it... people will act out of self-interest (mostly).

Scientists and engineers model real life objects and actions using mathematics. They (we) compute the solution to many equations to find the answers to thins we are looking for. The quadratic equation is among those that are most useful.
