I don't think he ever will. I think he is happy with number 8 because it's his own number, his own legacy. Why should he take on what his father did, when he is a good driver in his own right?

The number is not retired and technically can not be retired. A number in Nascar, I believe, has to be used 5 times before it can be retired. Richard Childress owns the #3. He never has to use it again. He's said that the only way he'll use it is if it's Dale Jr in it.
Dale Jr said that he'd possibly do that at the end of his career. He wants to win and suceed with DEI and continue on something his daddy started first.

the number has not been retired Richard Childress has just chosen not let anyone else drive the number 3. There has been talk of Junior eventually driving the number 3 when his contract is up at DEI. Teresa Earnhardt does not want that to happen but that is something for Dale Jr. and Childress to decide between them.

the number 3 is not retired, it is owned by RCR; and as of right now there is no plans to have anyone run it. From what I have heard, Theresa and Richard Childress have had some minor fights over this matter, because Childress has said that he doesn't want anyone to drive it. Theresa has said she would like an Earnhardt to race under the 3 sometime in the future but not necessarily Junior...so I would say that it all kind of depends on whether or not the two parties can come to an agreement. Junior himself made the comment once that he would like to the drive the 3 but not until later in his career when he feels he has earned it.

When he goes to drive for Richard Childress Racing.
Richard Childress still holds the rights to the #3 it is not retired.Childress has said that as long as he owns the rights to #3 it will never be used again unless it's by another Earnhart such as Dale Jr,or his or Kerrie's children and that is the straight poop.

Jr. will take on the No. 3 when it is right for him and him alone. Mr. Childress has already offered it to him and together they feel that its too early and not the right time. Personally, I feel that he should stay in the 8 and maybe drive the 3 for special events like All Star or maybe just at Daytona.

it is not dale jr's decision
it is richard childress's decision(the number has not been retired, it is just that childress stopped using it out of respect)
jr has expressed interest in driving the number 3 gm goodwrench car, but he said he would ONLY do it after he won a championship for DEI, for that is what hsi father wanted more than anything, a championship company

I didn't want anyone to drive the Goodwrench car after Earnhardts death, it was sad to see in on the track after. I definitely don't want anyone using the number "3". It should stay retired!!! But...if anyone is going to use the number "3" it should be Dale Jr. He won't do it justice though (sorry fans...noone drove like his dad...and noone ever will again :( )

i imagine issues in Dale's existence are coming to a level of replace. he's at a crossroads and he is going to ought to p.c.. a clean route quickly. He is prevalent with that, his followers and the media are even speculating about it. His contract with Bud is up on the top of this 365 days. His stepmother is operating DEI into the floor, properly possibly not because even Junior says she's a competent organisation woman. yet at any cost, i imagine the volume 3 motor vehicle may be cool for him. I particular as hell does not choose absolutely everyone else driving it.

That would be wrong simply because its an honor to have that number. I think Dale Jr will keep in retirement in honor of his father.
