I live in Brooklyn. The only way to find a decent rental is to use a real estate agent. This is unfortunate because they charge so much for doing so little. It is important that you consult with a number of agents, do not limit yourself to one. Even when there are a number of agents in one area, each seems to have its own inventory. And, believe me, there is no need to be loyal to one agent; they would not show you the same loyalty.

I don't know how it is in other areas, but I've dealt with many realtys in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, they know so little about the apartments they show, so don't expect too much from them.
