use the word "or" instead of "and" - using "and" means both of them have to endorse it, which can just be a pain. I am recently married and much preferred having the checks written like any of the following:

Mr or Mrs John Doe
Mrs Jane Doe
Mr John Doe
Jane or John Doe (don't use "Mr" or "Mrs" if you're close to them)
John Doe
Jane Doe

Hope that helps!!
