I saw this once on a Japanese show, they have a law requiring that at least 20% of the tops of buildings should be covered in greenery.

Rooftop Gardens.
I think it is a FANTASTIC idea and should be required on all new large buildings.

I don't know if it's a Japanese concept but "Green Roofs" is a hot topic in Toronto right now. You could try toronto.ca as the City is promoting the idea.

This is more than a rooftop garden. It's quite complex and REALLY expensive but environmentally great.

I honestly wonder the same thing myself. I couldn't really care for any of the mentioned places. If I'm going to eat out I really want to enjoy. I go to my local place and love it. It has a huge wait on busy nights but it's the only place like it and the food and prices are great! I think more people go to those places because they haven't tried other things. Sure if they tried other places they would branch off but some people just stick to what they know...

This is because of lack of space in Japan. The cities are extremely crowded.

I have also heard them called "roofscapes." Great concept, as long as the roof was built to withstand the weight.
