I've heard a lot of people say use Proactiv but I also heard that Proactiv, like other medicines or treatments don't work for everyone. If you were thinking about using Proactiv, be it that it is popular are largely recognized, I would recommend that you first try Acne Free. It is pretty much the competitor of Proactiv that is conveinently sold at your local drug store or grocery store.
I personally thought about trying Proactiv but it's too hard to get. The $20 promotion is only available through phone or internet and the Acne Free can be purchased for cheaper than that. Also, they offer a scar treatment that dramatically reduces the appearance of scars within 6 weeks. It's all your choice but it you just wanted to try something, I would say give it a chance....

An antibiotic I used for bad teenage acne was Tetracyclin - worked like a charm after a stronger, more potent medication, Accutane, failed (Accutane requires fasting blood tests every month - no fun). Right now, though, I am newly married and dont want to be on an antibiotic bc it interferes with the birth control pill - my acne is back after 4 years. I am on Differin which is kind of working, but the way it works makes your acne worse for up to the first four months of use, which is really frustrating. If you can use an antibiotic (IE, are willing to use condoms as secondary birth control or you are not sexually active), I recommend the use of Tetracyclin.

I use the Clear Skin Regimen at http://www.acne.org. It's a non-profit (so it's free), the guy who created used to suffer from pimples himself. The system works wonders on my face, and its helped countless other people. The best part is that you don't have to order or buy any expensive treatments, everything you need for the Regimen can be found at your local drugstore. Find out more at the website.
In general, for clear skin it helps if you: don't touch/pick at your skin, drink lots of water, wash your hair frequently, change your pillowcases, exercise, wear little make-up (or if needed, hypo-allergenic makeup), and minimize stress.
Another tip is to look up online consumer reviews of acne products before you buy them, using sites like epinions.com or drugstore.com. A great website I use to get cosmetic reviews is makeupalley.com (A mostly women's site). Hope this helps!
For oily skin:
Okay, this is going to sound really weird but this is one of the BEST-KEPT BEAUTY SECRET for those with oily skin: applying Milk of Magnesia to your skin completely sucks up oil. Weird, yes... but it's been a godsent for me!! Just apply a thin layer of the liquid to your face, and rub it in quickly because it dries fast on the skin.
I totally understand your problem. I have chronically oily skin, friends have actually told me to wipe my face because it gets so oily. Milk of Magnesia has helped me tremendously! My face stays matte through the day!

Try Mary Kay's Clarifying Facial Mask. I'm in my 30's and still tend to develop a pimple every now and again. If I don't use this mask at least once a week, I have a break-out.
It tends to be a little harsh and can over-dry your skin, so you may need to also use a moisturizer. Remember, even though you have oily skin, your face still needs moisture.
And no, I'm not a Mary Kay rep :)

CLEARASIL face wash, and CLEARASIL acne cream (the one's that say better skin in 3 days) No joke! I had horrible cystic acne and this stuffed has worked great.
Another is an antibiotic route-I've used MINOCYCLINE, not so much recently but it works very well.
PROACTIVE IS AWFUL, I wasted 100's of dollars and saw no improvement!

Probiotics and caprylic acid alternating with grapeseed extract. These can be found at the health food store and are taken internally. Cut the sugar and drink plenty of water and you should see a noticeable improvement in a month. I wish you the best.
