What is a space cowboy, exactly?

"Space cowboy" is simply a slang term, fairly common in the UK, which a very mild term of abuse for someone who is sane but not quite "all there"; in other words someone who acts irrationally or impulsively or crazily.

Something that doesn't exist, i've never seen a cowboy in space, only in cartoons or movies. It's a fictional character, besides cowboys are gay

space cowboy: a person who is wasted ..
They have their head in the clouds or their head is way out there in space..

i don't know what they mean in the songs, but it sounds cool.
and the tv series Firefly and the movie that was made from it "Serenity" was about cowboys in space.
