Football (soccer) is probably the most commonly played sport in america, or at least up there with basketball and baseball. There just isnt enough interest in soccer because of the major sports. In america u barely ever see MLS games (at least where i live) because channels like ESPN want to show things that appeal to most of the viewers (the major sports). the main reason that there arent many stars in american soccer is because kids want to make all the money in baskebtall, football, and baseball. If more kids would drop the fantasies of making so much money then the US would become even more competitive in world play.
But i do believe that the United States will do well in the next world cup. Im sure by then freddy adu will be a beast and im sure there are many other up and coming players that will be key players on the 2010 (?) team.

Americans do what they like. Futbal is not their cup of tea. So the europeans can't expect a competitor in America. The USA team has lost in the first round League / Group Matches & finished last in that group defeated by Ghana & others in the group.
Fut ball is a slow game. Scoring a goal is very rare. So, people have to sit patiently watching the players kicking the ball all the time here & there & not between the goal posts! What a dull game it has been! Much violence & a lot of players falling & rolling ewith pain on the ground!
Americans are not for taking such a risk to win a cup they don't want.

We are trying. It is difficult, because there just arent many people who care about it over here. A number of my friends have said, "Why is the World Cup such a big deal? Who cares?" Often, youngsters who are good athletes choose the more national sports, eg basketball, baseball, even hockey, as opposed to the global sport, soccer. Still, we are making progress. I would bet that, in the next three world cups, the United States will make the semifinals. Korea/Japan 2002 was a big breakthrough. After that, kids thought, "Soccer (as we call it) is cool!" It is too bad that we played poorly in this tournament. With a promising showing in South Africa 2010, however, U.S. Soccer will probably take a big rise.

I am an American and I am not really sure why. I really believe some things that we are different from England and the rest of Europe, is because in the beginning of our country, we were like children rebelling against our parent. An example is that in America we drive on the right side of the street. England drives on the left. Just an idea, LOL Most Americans knows nothing about soccer (as we call it). We were not raised watching it on television or played it ourselves. Lately, since we are having so much immigration from Mexico, there is a bigger interest in soccer. In a few years, we may give you a run for your money.

They have made the World Cup every time since 1990, includinga semi-finals appearance in 2002. It is just unfortunate that the US cannot put out a better product at this point. Soccer is a skill sport that is not seen as a glory sport, in which most of the talent spends their energies on. The other non-glory sports that the US is good at don't take as much skill, such as sprinting, which is mostly natural talent.

Soccer will never be big in the US. It will never rival the excitement we get from football, baseball, basketball, even hockey has a much bigger following than soccer ever will here.
