The phrase "5 states away" is not a measure of distance.
The trip through 5 states could be fewer miles than the trip from western New York state to New York City.
Incidentally, You can get from New York (state) to Kentucky by passing through only Pennsylvania and Ohio. Even if you count the states you start and end in, there would be only 4 states involved.
