Last catcher to lead the league in hitting? anyone....anyone....ok I will tell ya, Hall of Famer, Earnie Lombardi (1942). He only had 309 at bats in 105 games. The only other catcher with a batting title? ...a little tougher....the unforgettable Bubbles Hargrave (not quite Hall of Fame material) in 1926.
Thats right your boy has a chance to be the third catcher ever to win a batting title. He is the real deal. I know everyone always says you gotta move the great hitting catchers, but there are a couple out there who caught most of their career (hmmm.....recently, Mike Piazza and Pudge Rodriguez. Then there was Pudge Fisk and Johnny Bench. Yogi was a pretty good catcher as was Campenella). OK so some of them move, but the best stay right where they are. Mauer has a chance to be mentioned with these boys.....I hope he does it.

Well this is in baseball category, so I'll assume you are talking about Joe MAUER.
Joe Mauer was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and attended high school at the great Cretin-Derham Hall High School, a Catholic St. Paul school. Gradutating in 2000, he was one of the greatest athletes the school had ever seen. He was a three sport athlete, especially excelling in Football and Baseball. As quarterback for the CDH Raiders, he amassed 41 Touchdowns in his senior year, and let the raiders to their first state championship. He stood out even more in baseball. In his ENTIRE 4 YEAR HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL CAREER as catcher for CDH, he struck out ONE TIME. He hit .605 in his senior season and homered in 7 consecutive games (a MN Record). He was named Gatorade's National Player of the Year, Parade and USA Today Player of the Year and a Reebok/ESPN High School All-American.
Joe could have easily started a career in football, as he was heavily recruited by high-caliber schools such as Florida State University. Instead, he decided to play professional baseball as a catcher. The state of Minnesota rejoiced when he was drafted first overall in the MLB draft by the hometown Minnesota Twins. He worked his way up through the Twins minor league system over the years.
Now it is 2006. July 6, 2006. Joe is widely regarded as the best catcher in the major leagues. Joe has just been elected to his first all-star team. But none of these accomplishments is as impressive as his BATTING AVERAGE. Joe Mauer is batting .391 as a CATCHER. He is 40 POINTS ahead of Ichiro for the AL batting title!!
I have seen him many many times, going back to his high school days. At age 23, he has a flawless swing, and near-perfect pitch selection. Quite simply, he is the greatest hitter I have ever seen.

Read an article last year, I believe, in SI. He's from Minn., so they knew his game. Article I read said he and his dad invented a training device to use during the Minn. winters. Obvouisly, training aid works.

They'll convert him to another position--like Biggio--if he keeps hitting like this to get his bat in the line-up EVERYDAY.
And that's why he doesnt have the RBI's other guys do; just check out his AB's
