All I was hearing for a couple days until recently was that they were aimed towards us. Nothing about that they were not actual long range missles. I did hear early on that they didn't make it past the sea of Japan. I think the networks were trying to generate more interest which wouldn't have been so high if we knew that these were short range missles. Or maybe the networks didn't even know that they were?

One missle that was tested is intended to be long range - long enough to reach the Pacific coast. That test happened to be a failure, but it's still a long range missle test.

I heard right away from CNN that most of the missiles fired were short range, and that the long range one failed.

I don't think we heard as much about the short range missiles beforehand because they aren't much of a threat towards the US.
