It's a style of dance and music which originated in Spain. I think it was started by oppressed gypsies who used the music as a way to express their sadness and anger. Today it appears in several forms, which can include these original feelings, but also several "happier" moods. There are many groups which tour around the world, with special choreographed dance moves and a team of pretty, young dancers and musicians. However the most genuine Flamenco dancing you will find is that which is truly improvised by both dancers and musicians. I went to a small club earlier this year while in Spain, and I got a chance to see a group of 3 people perform. Pretty interesting.

I am constantly amazed by Flamenco...though I don't know that much about it, I do know that (like all other latino styles of dance and music) it has an incredibly rich and unique soul to it. I've always wanted to be able to dance with a dress like that.

On guitar its played with a classical guitar with nylon strings. It is often played at rapid speeds. Paco DeLuca is about the best flamenco guitarist . Al Dimeola is also great when he dabbles in this genre.
