I will be using 4x4 post as support post 20 ft. away for the house how do I make sure the are square with the house?

The same method the Egyptians used to make sure the bases of their pyramids were square. 3,4,5 If one leg of a triangle is three feet, another is four feet, and the hypotenuse is five feet, then the intersection of the three and four foot legs is a perfect right angle (90 degrees). This works with any multiples. You can use 15 feet , 20 feet, and 25 feet. Just remember if you have a 25 foot tape measure, you'll ruin it if you pull it all of the way out to 25 feet.

take one pole and measure from the oppisite end of the house it would end up being an X after you measure both poles to the house. To make it square, make sure the numbers are the same. If one pole is 12 feet from the oppisite corner, then the other one should be the same

if you have to ask your out of your realm basic carpentry is a must if your going to tackle a project of this proportion
keep in mind most citys will require a building permit with plans
