They could have but they wanted him to take a bunch of tests before they signed him but he said no way. What a mistake that was.

I'm an Indians fan and I miss Jim Thome terribly...the Twins are crazy not to sign him...he's great!!

Thome wasnt a free agent. He was signed and has an enormous contract. He was traded to the white sox for aaron rowand and the phillies are paying half of his salary for the next 2 seasons.

Thome did go to the NL. He signed with the Phillies and was traded to the WhiteSox this off-season.
