what gets an employer to hire someone like me?

I would advise you to start by looking for an entry-level bookkeeping job. Many of these don't even require a college diploma, so the fact that you went to college may be an asset. Try to learn on the job and take on increasing levels of responsibility. If you are serious about accounting, you will want to eventually become a CPA (certified public accountant) but some real life experience in the trenches may help you to better understand this field. Another idea is to take an H&R Block Tax Course in the autumn and try to pick up some work as a tax preparer. This may allow you to make some more contacts in the accounting world. Good luck!

Are you planning on a career in accounting just because you think it is lucrative? Accounting is a very demanding career choice and there are easier ways to make money. However, if this is something that you truly wish to pursue than you should get some books on accounting - even if they are the "Idiots Guide" or the "for Dummies" series of books; you gotta start somewhere. If you have a GPA that low, and absolutely no experience it is possible that you could still get an interview, but much less likely to actually get the job.

There is another route though. You could volunteer to be an intern in an accounting firm or some other business agency. You would not be paid but you would gain valuable experience that will only help you in later job searches. Send an email to agencies in your area requesting information about this possibility. It could really open doors for you - that is, if you are really serious.

Very few employers pay attention to your GPA. They just want to see that you have a 4 year degree.

Start off at entry level like everyone else does and work hard. You will probably learn everything you need to know on the job.

You probably should have thought about that before you graduated. :) However, I can relate to your concern. I graduated from LSU with a 2.0*** GPA.

Don't put your GPA on your resume.

When it comes time to interview, know your stuff. Take the time to study up when it counts and you'll be fine.

A 2.3 GPA suggests that maybe sitting around crunching numbers might not be your thing. Why accounting? What do you truly enjoy? What are you truly good at? What would you really, truly want to do? Get certified in THAT and no matter what you get paid, you'll be happy and that's more than most people can say on their jobs.

If you can take the CPA exam, do it and pass all four parts. This will boost your resume. For now, really punch up any jobs on your resume. Make sure you tailor your resume to the company you are applying to. And, take any entry level job in accounting, bookkeeping, or recordkeeping you can. Remember, after your first job, most companies don't even care what your GPA was. They are looking for experience.

If this GPA is your "degree score" -- ouch! The competition pool is fierce. Try your luck as a bank teller and maybe you can work your way to the accounting department.

many places don't look at your gpa anyway. if you didn't graduate yet, look into an internship. if you did just start applying for jobs. ask around and see if anyone who knows you knows of jobs....that can help you get in the door as well.
