'If you won the lotto tomorrow - what would you do with yourself?'. Always works for me - people dig talking about thier hopes and dreams. Also helps them open up to others while still being a light hearted question.

Sex, music, movies, books. Those are safe discussion starters.
Stay away from religion and politics as discussion "starters"...you don't know how crazy the people are that you are initiating conversation with.

a good discussion starter is to get buck naked and do some jumping jacks, that outta start and interesting conversation

usually i start with " have you seen any good movies latley" or what do you like to do as a hooby
