i also suggest getting 'classroom in a book' or some other manual to help you get started but here's a brief rundown on after effects:
-it's a pixel based 2D animation program but it can also handle vector graphics and do some 3D.
-it's not 'animation' in the sense of pixar movies or even pokemon.
-if you've ever seen the opening of monsters, inc. i believe that was done in after effects.
-images can be moved along a directional path and altered over time.
-it's very easy to drag photoshop images in and work with them.
-it works in layers just like photoshop.
-see if you can find any old episodes of sesame street from 70's or 80's. many of their 'stop motion' sequences were done in the after effects style. one of the education cable channels shows old episodes.
-just imagine creating a multi-layered photoshop image with background, different characters and objects, and then being able to make them move!
