The American Book Exchange: www.abebooks.com
This is a site which holds the inventories of 1000s of booksells across the US (and often europe, despite the origin of the name) If you click on the 'advanced search' link there will be a page with a checkbox to click for '1st edition'. From there you can search their inventory for 1st editions only, and look for what you like.

Unlike ebay there is no bidding and waiting games. But like Ebay, abebooks is not in possession of the books at hand, they only communicate your intent to buy to the proper owner of the book (usually a dealer someplace). It is rare, but I have tried to buy a book only to be told it was already sold in person at the shop.

You can post your desired titles/editions on Abebooks ( www.abebooks.com ). They will notify you by email when one of your titles is available.

If you can get to Oxford, MS, you might try Off Square Books (I think it is the same folks as Square Books). They have an awesome collection and an adorable store cat to keep you company as you read.

Alibris or Ebay are good places to find collectable books.
