Most running shoes have equivalent shock absorption. You need to be fit for a running shoe at your local running store. To reduce pain in your joints, including your knees, you need to be properly fit into a shoe that is going to support your biomechanics. If I had to steer you clear of any one shoe, it would be the Nike Shox. THis shoe is designed for aesthetics and it is poorly engineered. I help a lot of people every day who have been injured because of this shoe. Only those with "perfect" mechanics can get away with wearing it (and even if you do have perfect mechanics, I dont recommend it). Depending on your "pains" there are different shoes out there that can help. Some have more padding in the forefoot, some have a second-density piece under the arch to add stability. Just go get fit. Running store employees know what they are doing.

Mizuno WaveRunners or Inspires are amazing! I have knee issues due to running on pavement in bad shoes and I went to a specialty running shoe store. The guy recommended me the Mizunos. I absolutely love them. They have "waves" which an in the cushioning of the shoe that receive the impact before it gets to your knees.

The shoe store is called Fleet Feet. They have a website so that you can locate one of their stores. I buy all my shoes there. They tend to be a bit pricey but it pays off in the end.

I like my mizuno inspires or adidas supernova classics. Pavement is your last choice of running surface though okay? It's too hard/

Jenny Jo is right, go to a running store and get fitted. Do not go to a sports store in the mall, they don;t know crap. And sad but true, I don;t see any serious road racers wearing the Nike SHox.
