many people speak best about subjects that they are most familiar with, so you might want to take that into consideration. you should also think about any experiences you have had that might be a good topic for a speech. what does your speech have to be on anyway? you cuold also choose a topic that you don't know a lot about, but would like to know more about, that way you can research about something you are interested in and it won't be boring. you can do a speech on certain people (bush, oprah, anyone lol), places (iraq, the grand canyon, alcatraz), things (cell phones, mosques, robots), events (marraige, super bowl, passover), processes (learning cpr, studying abroad, cooking thai food), concepts (pacifism, conservatism, medical ethics), natural phenomena (earthquakes, global warming, tsunami), problems (terrorism, election fraud, childhood obesity), or plans and policies (homeland security, protecting civil liberties, homeschooling).
hope that gave you some ideas! good luck.

I just have some questions for you?
1. Is this paper open topic (as in you can write about whatever you want to within reason)?
2. If this paper is open topic, then...what are you interested in?
3. How long does this paper have to be?
4. What type of paper is it? (Informative, Persuasive, argumentative, imaginative, etc.)
My advice is to write about a hobby or pet or some event. Do your report on Olympus Mons of Mars or the Sun. How about Earth? You could write about training a dog or how to cook something. If the paper can be fantasy then write a short story or research faeries. Dragons have a good history too and the Chinese really value them. Just write on something that interests you and you'll not only have turned in a great paper but you would have hopefully enjoyed writing it. Good Luck!

How about the constant search for a line between civil liberties and the duty to protect us by the government? Or even a speech about famous speeches - "The only thing to fear is fear itself." and so forth? Maybe a speech about what kind of leader we need in this country - this world? Just some ideas...

Pick a topic that interests you the most as well as those of your audience. Consider the profile of your audience -- age, occupation, gender, interests. That should be your topic.
That topic also should be fit for the occasion. Your speech is for what celebration or occasion?
Factor in those and viola! you'll have a great time delivering your speech.
By the way, you don't have to pretend to be interested in an intelligent, high-falluting topic. Audience and listeners don't want pretentious speakers.
Goodluck.

I used to do this for every speech class that required a demonstrative speech: how to braid hair! I have long(super long blond hair) and everyone in the class always loved watching me braid! A+ guaranteed....
