Both carry the same number of chromosomes. They're equally important.
The ancient Greeks believed that the sperm decided everything, and that not the egg but corruption from the females' blood changed the sex of the baby to female.
There are differences in transmission, since only the males have a Y. In particular the sperm decides the sex of the baby and the egg determines most sex-linked traits in boys.
