It's probably due to muddling of cause and effect.

In years gone by, most people who needed glasses didn't get them. They were too expensive and not a justifiable expense for someone in manual or agricultural labor. This is particularly the case for long-sighted people - you only need reading glasses if you can read.

Rich people could afford glasses as a luxury; white collar workers and academics could justify the expense for their work. Since those were the only people with glasses it was natural to associate spectacles and intelligence - especially reading glasses. In addition, glasses represent physical weakness and would tend to be shunned by those who measure their worth by physical prowess - such as fighting or sports.

Nowadays far more people wear contact lenses or have laser eye surgery. In the future, wearing glasses, like grey hair, baldness and wrinkles, may be associated with those who cannot afford to "look right."

Well, it seems your question and the related details contradict themselves a little. The notes you've added in suggest that what you're really saying is that you have a particular stereotype of people who wear glasses - as opposed to the question which is asking about a quantifiable level of intelligence.

So, throwing it back to you... Why DO you think people who wear glasses are more intelligent ?

Because I don't relate glasses to much except bad eyesight !

You can improve your eyesight by simply learning, naturally and practicing the correct way to see for a few small minutes a day.
You can check this method based on a scientific researches : ( http://getyourvisionbacknow.keysolve.net )

If glasses are worn continuously over time the poor vision will generally become worse. Essentially what glasses do is lock the eyes into their refractive state and in order to see through your lenses you have to maintain the poor vision that the lenses are designed to correct.
"Restore my vision” program you'll be taken by the hand, it shows you how to improve your vision naturally, permanent and complete solution.
Even the American Optometric Association has been forced to admit these things! I'm sure that you will not regret your decision.

It's all an act! Or maybe because so many people need glasses to read or study and take them off to go and party. So you think they're intelligent when they wear the glasses and not when they don't.

Actually, there was a study on this that I read a year or two ago. Can't recall the authors though, sorry.

The basic conclusion of their study was that as kids, 'smart' people read more. This above average reading contributed to their needing glasses later in life.

So, why to intelligent people seem to have more glasses is because they probably read more as a kid and all that reading caused some damage to their eyes later in life.

we relate glasses with eyes eyes with reading reading with knowledge. jocks don't wear glasses jocks are dumb. jocks don't study they play sports sports don't require book smarts. all of this is of course obsurde. I my self played sports and don't wear glasses but I am more intellegent than the average american anyway so the answer is really that the media through movies sitcoms has always used glasses to depict the nerdy or intelligent character over time the public has accepted this as a trueism. but in fact if you really talk to most people and analize there intelligence in a conversation you will come to realize that it is just another stereo type fed to us that we easily accept as a form of double think we know people who were glasses who are in fact not intelligent but at first meeting accept that they are intelligent

I suppose because traditionally people who looked at books for any length of time suffered eye strain because they had candle light to see by if the sun had gone down. Also poor diet and higher incidences of disease etc means anyone who wanted to read would probably have had to use glasses to be able to see anything. Also people who are intelligent are often assumed to always have their head in a book ... ergo spectacles = reading = well-read = intelligent

because the invention of glasses was for people that wanted to read and because of literacy and study. only recently have most people in the developed world been forced to be literate by society. the stigma of glasses related to intelligence has stuck to the wearing of glasses.

It is because some people are of the opinion that studying and reading too much makes your eyes weak. So a person with glasses means a person who studies and reads alot and therefore has poor eyesight (and therefore needs glasses!!!)

Because people that think they are smart want to look like they are smart so they wear glasses. But not all intelligent people wear glasses.

I dont think it's necessarily true that someone who wears glasses is smarter or more intelligent. However, we relate them because we tend to think that they wear glasses because they read a lot and they read a lot because they're smart.
