Truck Idles great. when accelerating i get a lot of valve chatter. Power from the engine feels good. It wont burn the tires off but it will go 70 no problem and once you acheive the speed you want and let off of the gas the chattering is totally quiet. Once you start to accelerate again the chattering comes back. It starts and runs fine but when you accelerate it chatters. Valves, guides, springs what is it? Thanks all you answers people out there.

Sounds to me like you have a pinging problem which can be caused by a bad EGR valve or a bad Knock sensor.
Pinging is predetonation of the fuel in the cylinders, usually by having the ignition timing too far advanced, or the engine temp is too high.
Check thermostat, EGR valve and passages also check ignition base timing.

sometimes spark knock (sounds like a chatter) is caused by too low of octane try a bottle of octane boost or some gas treatment before you go and get all expensive you never know.also an easy way to adjust your valves is. loosen one at a time until you hear a chatter (you will hear a distinct chatter)tighten the nut until it stops chattering then you go a quater turn more thats where it should be.

Another thing to look for is the mechanical advance in the distributor, in older trucks they tend to freeze up and can cause the same symptoms. Just remove the cap and see if you can turn the rotor a little with it returning aginst spring tension. If not remove the rotor and inspect the mechanical advance. A little lube may be all it needs.

its an 88 it shold be fuel injected with hydraulic lifters. if no one has been inside the engine then teh lifters should be adjusted properly. maybe they collapsed. take it to amechanic they can probably tell you without charging you. I'd have to hear it to know more
