I live in Texas. I am not a native Texan, I'm a military brat who has been everywhere. People are nice, people are rude, people are the same in every state I have ever lived. If they hate something, they hate it passionately, whether its race or politics or music or religion. I live in Texas, and we don't all have accents, we don't all thump the Bible over everyone's head, we eat French cuisine and Asian cuisine, we listen to jazz and blues and rap and metal, and there is more culture in this little area than most of the places I have ever lived.
It gets mildly annoying to see such ignorance, but I don't think Americans take the viewpoints of the world as seriously as those stereotyping us. A lot of us are just trying to make it through our little circles of life, much less the world's view on us.

I have known quite a few - for the most part they think they are really intelligent....one said to me once "Why should I learn about a country when I am never going to go there." For the most part they are ignorant as it has been drummed into them that America is the bee all and end all. Indotrination I believe and if you only have half a brain you gonna fall into the trap of not bothering with anything else.
I have only been there once the country is very pretty, but I was shocked to see how much fatter they are than us. They are friendly enough though....they just need to be aware of other cultures etc. Best way to learn is to travel.

I think we are the greatest country in the world. Being the greatest, however, does not always mean the "nicest". I think one problem now is the media .. not that it is always unfair but the visibility of what it takes to be a superpower can be distressing. I am not so deluded to believe that all the comforts that I enjoy as a citizen are not at the expense of others. I still enjoy those comforts, however, and do not bash my government for the luxuries I enjoy.
We are "New Rome" with all of its greatness and horror ... same as the human race which is also filled with greatness and horror ....
We are simply winning the "human race" at the moment..

I think the American people, like everywhere else is a mix of good, bad and grey. People just trying to get on.
We love to hate the stereotypes, fat, stupid tourists are always game for a laugh, but when my friend married an American and we were invaded for the wedding, I met some lovely, genuine people.
I will nott tell you what I think of their president, except to say he seems to have a god complex.

Purely misunderstood in a world of arrogant predjudice.
PS I asked the question again at a time when brits are more likely to be on so that I could get more of their opinions, hope you don't mind!
