Make sure your gas cap is on tight. It's a very common reason the light comes on. If that's the probelm, the light goes off in a few days to a week.

disconneting the battery will most likely reset it, but if the problem is still there it will be back. Have it checked out with normal mechanic, if the check engine is on - there is a code stored in the engine computer - mechanic can check it. If he says "no problems" he just doesn't know how to fix it.

go to autozone they will scan for free. fyi the light has a purpose if it came on then there is afault in an emmisions system.
may be something as simple as a loose gas cap. or something as severe as engine or trans problems. the car designer don't just have it turn on for looks. also the days off disconnecting the battery are gone the problem needs not to occur for 50 drive cycles.. no not key on either. full drive cycles.

Your question is to vague, depending on the car model or type. I know you can pull the fuse on a honda accord 1999 model. Also ford has a three trip without a fault automatic reset on the 2001 ford trucks. Need more info!!!

hi, just another sugestion. you may have a computer (ecm) problem. sometimes they have to be what they call "flashed". to do that you should take it to a dealer of your make of car. They not only flash the ecm, but they can scan your car and make a better diagnosis of what your problem is. Also, on some newer cars there is a mileage marker built into the ecm that when you reach that certain mileage it automatically comes on so you do the required maintenance on it to help keep your warranty valid. It's also a way for the dealer to make money. Go figure. thanks, gramps

Check the fluid levels, or get the oil changed.
