3 seconds.

Stop trying to pet it. If you want a petable pet, get a dog.

A fish has a memory a lot longer then 3 seconds. That is a really out dated concept. People have clicker trained fish and there is always the sycronized swimmers (goldfish not people). Anyone who has ever had a fish tank can tell you they recognize you as that thing that feeds them. That does in fact take long term memory. Even if they are just conditioned- which if you have fish then you know isn't true- it is still learning.

I have never pet any of my fish but a good friend of mine (also works in pet store) says that if you turn an algae eater up side down and rub it's stomach it will make grunting noises. However, I have never tried it. Also, I once saw an episode of myth busters on the discovery channel where they tested a goldfish's memory by setting up a maze to their food. I don't remember all the details but there was two goldfish and they both found their food by using their memory.

U have to feed Ur fish everyday (if they finish the food U give them last time) & clean their water everyday, give them fresh water to swim in. U have to look/observe them when U have time. & keep doing this for 2 months, so the fish know U are friendly & kind. Have U noticed that the fish all gather together when U come near, that means they are hungry, give them food or pet them at that time. Just go wash Ur hands first, then stick Ur finger into the water (don't move) then the fish will come up to Ur finger & try to chew it. It feels inchy, but Ur are happy.

It is its only method of evasion. The fish thinks that you are trying to hurt it or eat it. If it is a gold fish, its memory lasts only 3 seconds. Please leave the fish alone, you are terrorizing it. You may not think about it, but that is very scary for the little thing. Tapping on the glass tank or bowl is also. Good luck with raising your new pet.

Stop trying to pet your fish, all your doing is removing its slime coat. And anyone who thinks fish only have a 3 second memory needs to learn a little more about fish before they try to give people answers.

Petting a fish could ruin its slimecoating. Damage to the slimecoat could lead to infections while can, ultimately, lead to death.

Stop petting your fish.

Don't pet your fish. That'll damage it's slime coat, which is what keeps out harmful bacteria. It would be like someone petting off your skin. :(
