Because people are too busy working, having babies and buying useless stuff. Americans 'think' they care about noble words like freedom and democracy, but really they're pretty self-centered and as you say, apathetic.

Your question asserts a false belief that Americans are apathetic about real world problems.

The fact that Pres. Bush is working with China to quell North Korean insanity is evidence that we are not apathetic about real world problems. The news networks, CNN, MSNBC and Fox all report on world events regularly. The drudgereport.com reports on many world wide events.

Jewishworldreport.com is another source of global events.

ESPN will show international sports programs.

Americans are also some of the most charitable people in the world. We donated $$$millions$$$ of personal funds to South East Asian countries afflicted by the Tsunami. We have also donated between $10million and $25million for natural disasters which occur world wide. This includes the earthquakes in Pakistan (csmonitor.com).

Furthermore, no other countries, maybe except for Great Britain, have the environmental protection laws that we do.

To say that Americans are apathetic about real world problems is simply not true.

Because Americans for the most part live sheltered lives in which they only allow trivial junk to flow into their consciousness. News in not news, it is entertainment. Music has become thought provoking but the models are abhorrent providing the most base examples of what is significant in life. No one is discussing the purpose of life, why America has so much and what responsibilities this engenders. Well, maybe Bill Gates is.

Because our media and politicians feed us nothing but wedge issues (especially in even numbered years) to distract us from real world problems. The majorty of Americans will never be affected by gay marriage, illegal immigration, assisted suicide, flag burning, etc... etc... But if they can keep you glued to the set in fear of these things, the media get to keep their ratings high. If they can get you to vote upon these issues that will never make a difference in your life instead of voting on their actual job performance, the politicians get to keep their jobs.
